Buying a beef share is one of the best ways to stock your freezer with high-quality, pasture-raised beef at a lower cost per pound. But if you're new to the process, choosing between a whole, half, or quarter share can feel overwhelming. Here's what you need to know.
What Is a Beef Share?
A beef share (also called a beef bundle or cow share) means you're buying a portion of a whole animal directly from a ranch. Rather than picking up a few steaks at the grocery store, you receive a variety of cuts — from ground beef and roasts to steaks and brisket — all at once, typically packaged and frozen.
Quarter Share
A quarter share is the most popular starting point for first-time buyers. You'll receive roughly 80–100 lbs of beef, which typically fits in a standard 5 cu. ft. chest freezer or a large section of an upright freezer. It's a great way to experience the full range of cuts without a huge upfront commitment.
- Best for: Couples or small families new to buying in bulk
- Freezer space needed: ~5 cubic feet
- Cost: Lower upfront investment
Half Share
A half share gives you roughly 180–220 lbs of beef and is ideal for families who cook regularly at home or want to stock up for a full year. With a half share, you get more of every cut — more steaks, more roasts, more ground beef — and the best value per pound.
- Best for: Families of 3–5, avid grillers, or meal preppers
- Freezer space needed: ~10–12 cubic feet
- Cost: Better price per pound than a quarter
Whole Share
A whole share is for the serious beef lover. You'll receive approximately 380–440 lbs of beef, with the most control over how cuts are divided. Many ranchers allow additional customization on cut thickness, bone-in vs. boneless, and more when you take the whole animal.
- Best for: Large families, co-op splits between two households, restaurants
- Freezer space needed: ~20–22 cubic feet
- Cost: Best price per pound overall
How to Split a Share
If a whole or half share feels like too much, consider splitting with a neighbor, friend, or family member. It's a common practice and a great way to get the pricing benefits of buying in bulk while sharing the freezer load.
