How to Choose Between a Whole, Half, or Quarter Beef Share

Buying a beef share is one of the best decisions you can make for your family's table — but with whole, half, and quarter options available, how do you know which is right for you? Here's what you need to know before you order from Roaring Hills Ranch.

Quarter Beef Share (~100–125 lbs of finished cuts)

A quarter share is the perfect starting point for smaller households or first-time beef share buyers. You'll get a well-rounded mix of steaks, roasts, ground beef, and more — enough to fill one standard chest freezer shelf. It's a low-commitment way to experience the quality difference of pasture-raised Brangus beef without a huge upfront investment in freezer space.

Best for: 1–2 person households, first-time buyers, or those with limited freezer space.

Half Beef Share (~200–250 lbs of finished cuts)

The half share is our most popular option. You get all the variety of a whole beef — premium steaks, brisket, short ribs, roasts, and plenty of ground beef — at a better price per pound than buying retail. You'll need about 8–10 cubic feet of freezer space (a standard chest freezer).

Best for: Families of 3–5, avid home cooks, or anyone who loves having a well-stocked freezer year-round.

Whole Beef Share (~400–500 lbs of finished cuts)

A whole share gives you maximum variety and the best value per pound. You'll receive every primal cut from nose to tail — from tenderloin and ribeyes to oxtail and organ meats if you want them. You'll need two standard chest freezers or a large upright freezer.

Best for: Large families, those who entertain frequently, hunters who know how to use a freezer, or households that want to split the share with a neighbor or family member.

Key Questions to Ask Yourself

  • How much freezer space do I have? A quarter needs roughly 4–5 cu ft; a half, 8–10 cu ft; a whole, 16–20 cu ft.
  • How often does my household cook red meat? A family cooking beef 3–4 times a week will work through a half share in 6–9 months comfortably.
  • Do I have a co-buyer? Splitting a whole beef with a friend or family member is a great way to save money and reduce freezer commitment.
